Integrating Mac Systems into
a Medical IT Infrastructure
Mannheim’s Integration
in Detail
In 2007, we successfully deployed an OsiriX imaging workstation on the Mac
platform at the University Hospital of Mannheim’s Department of Clinical Radiology.
We carefully honored all of the hospital’s strict integration and acceptance guidelines.
The following section describes the deployment and testing of this workstation
in detail.
Workstation Conguration
The workstation hardware used for this case study is an Apple Mac Pro with the
following conguration:
• Two 3.0GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon processors
• 16GB RAM
• 150GB system hard disk
• Two 750GB data hard disks forming a RAID 0 set
• One SuperDrive (DVD-RW)
• NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 stereo graphics card
• Bluetooth, WLAN
• Standard Apple Keyboard and Mouse
• Two 30-inch Apple Cinema Displays
The cost in U.S. dollars of the above hardware conguration, at the time this paper
was published in summer 2007, was approximately $14,150.
The workstation conguration included only standard, commercially available
components as listed in the Apple Online Store in August 2007. A standard USB
cable-based headset (Logitech Premium Notebook Headset)
6
and a dedicated
dictation device (Philips SpeechMike Pro)
7
enabled online speech recognition.
An eye-one
8
colorimeter was utilized for calibrations, and the PEHA med CD-LUX
9
densitometer was used for conformity and constancy testing.
The workstation also featured the following software:
Operating system Mac OS X version 10.4.10 (Mac OS X ships free with new Apple systems)
