To have a search policy dened automatically:

1 Open System Preferences and click Accounts.

2 If the lock icon is locked, unlock it by clicking it and entering the name and password

of an administrator.

3 Click Login Options, then click Join or Edit.

4 Click Open Directory Utility.

5 If the lock icon is locked, unlock it by clicking it and entering the name and password

of an administrator.

6 Click Search Policy and choose a search policy:

Â Authentication: Shows the search policy used for authentication and most other

administrative data.

Â Contacts: Shows the search policy used for contact information in applications such

as Address Book.

7 From the Search pop-up menu, choose Automatic, then click Apply.

8 In System Preferences, make sure the computer’s Network preferences are congured

to use DHCP or DHCP with a manual IP address.

Dening Custom Search Policies

Using Directory Utility, you can congure a Mac OS X computer’s authentication and

contacts search policies to use a custom list of directory domains.

A custom list starts with the computer’s local directory domain and can include Open

Directory (and other LDAP directory domains), an Active Directory domain, shared

directory domains, BSD conguration les, and an NIS domain.

If a directory domain specied on a computer’s custom search policy is not available, a

delay occurs when the computer starts up.

To specify a custom list of directory domains for a search policy:

1 Open System Preferences and click Accounts.

2 If the lock icon is locked, unlock it by clicking it and entering the name and password

of an administrator.

3 Click Login Options, then click Join or Edit.

4 Click Open Directory Utility.

5 If the lock icon is locked, unlock it by clicking it and entering the name and password

of an administrator.
